To demonstrate that any product or manufacturing process meets a specified functional demand requires quantitative measurements traceable to an agreed metrology unit. Hence, to bring nanotechnology through to successful business calls for access to the relevant metrology tools that provide the ability to measure in three dimensions with atomic resolution over large areas. For industrial application this must also be achieved at a suitable speed/throughput.
Given the breadth of markets, products and applications into which nanotechnologies feed, the process chain for dissemination of metrology techniques as well as traceability to national standards and internationally harmonised standard methods will be specific to the particular nanotechnology area addressed. To this end a series of focus activities in nanometrology have been established under the European Framework 7 Programme Co-Nanomet addressing the following core nanotechnology related areas:
The following discussion papers address the current status, future needs and opportunities in each nanometrology area. They are intended to both inform on the subject area and to stimulate debate at a European level and we invite interested individuals or organizations to contribute views and information.
